Latin motto: Fortis et liber (Strong and free)

The Alberta tartan is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, who served as Canadian Vice Regal Consort when her husband was Governor General of Canada.

Alberta's tartan was designed by Alison Lamb and Ellen Neilsen, two ladies from the Edmonton Rehabilitation Society. Alison Lamb was the Society's Executive Director and Ellen Neilsen was the weaving instructor. Ellen was originally from Denmark where she learned her trade. For a number of years she resided in Alberta's Coal Branch region south of Edson with her husband, Niels Nielsen. It was there, in Alberta's great outdoors that the inspiration for the tartans colours came from.

Adopted by the Provincial Legislature in March 1961, the green represents the forests; the gold is for the wheat and sunshine; the blue is for the lakes and skies; the black for the oil and coal and the pink for wild rose, the Provincial emblem.
