Dundee
Gaelic: Dun Deagh
Crest: Lilly
Latin Motto: Dei Donum (Gift of God) and Prudentia et Candore (With Thought And Purity)
Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland and, fully named as Dundee City. It lies on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea. Evidence suggests Dundee has been continuously occupied since the Mesolithic.
The town developed into a Burgh in Medieval times, and expanded rapidly in the 19th century largely due to the jute industry. This, along with its other major industries gave Dundee its epithet as the city of "jam, jute and journalism".
Today, Dundee is promoted as the City of Discovery, in honour of Dundee's history of scientific activities and of the RRS Discovery, Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic exploration vessel, which was built in Dundee and is now berthed in the city harbour. Dundee has two universities — the University of Dundee and the University of Abertay Dundee.
The tartan is recorded in the 1819 Key Pattern Books of Wilson of Bannockburn
