Gow

Gaelic Name: Mac s'Ghobhainn

Gow is a  name derived from the Gaelic 'Gobha' meaning blacksmith or armourer.  Being a trade name it is found throughout Scotland.

TThe Highland family of Gows which rose to most prominence are believed to have grown with the Macphersons. The Glows resided mainly in the lands surrounding Inverness and Perth. 

 

The famous fiddle player Neil Gow, born 1727, came from Dunkled.  With the patronage of the Duke of Atholl he moved around in noble circles and he became famous for his strathspeys and reels.


The name MacGowan, a derivative of the name Gow, is also spread over Scotland. The MacGown clan were known to be in Nithsdale in the 1100s but are found in Stirling, Fife, Glasgow and down to Dumfries.
