MacFadyen

All variants of this name derive from the Gaelic Macphaidein, 'son of little Patrick', and it is first recorded in Kintyre in 1304. There is a tradition that the clan was the first owner of Lochbuie, and subsequently became itinerant goldsmiths. The name was common in Islay, Mull, and Tiree.  

The name itself is regarded as a sept of Clan MacLean, due to a constant problem of spelling and misspellings which occur for many Scottish names.  It is specifically linked to Maclaines of Lochbuie (see MacLaine Lochbuie).
