We are proud to announce that Kinloch Anderson has been granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as Tailors and Kiltmakers to His Majesty King Charles III. In the first of his reign we are one of only 145 individuals and businesses to receive a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HM The King.
Over the years, our business has received many accolades, but particular honour is taken in The Royal Warrants of Appointment as Tailors and Kiltmakers. Our long-standing relationship with the Crown started in 1903, when we first supplied King Edward VII with tartans. Since then, we have been supplying fabrics, kilts, skirts, and clothing to different members of the Royal Family which led Kinloch Anderson to be granted the first Royal Warrant by King George V in 1934. Royal Warrants mark our dedication and passion for what we do. To this day, we are the only Scottish company to have simultaneously held all three Royal Warrants of Appointment to Queen Elizabeth II, The Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and The Late Duke of Edinburgh.
What is a Royal Warrant?
In order to be considered for the granting of a Royal Warrant of Appointment, a company must supply the member of the Royal Family concerned, or their Household, with products or services in significant quantity over a lengthy period of time. The concept of the Royal Warrant of Appointment dates back to the advent of the monarchy. The Royal Warrant Holders Association was formed in 1840 to ensure consistency and existence of the accolade and, today the Association supports a broad range of charities and individuals through grants from The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) which aims to sustain and promote British Craftmanship.
The Royal Warrant has always been recognition of personal service of the highest order. It is granted to a named individual within the company who is then responsible for ensuring that the Warrant is correctly used. There are strict rules which govern the use and display of the Royal Arms, and the final decision to grant a Royal Warrant of Appointment is made by the member of the Royal Family concerned. As Royal Warrant Holders, we look forward to displaying the new Royal Arms on our products and building, so follow our journey as we wait for the new Royal Arms to be revealed.
The Balmoral Tartan – the World’s most exclusive tartan
Designed in 1857 by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, the Tartan was named after the place they loved the most, Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside in the Scottish Highlands. Inspired by the Scottish surroundings and is composed of different rations of black and white threads, which represent the subtle greys of the Deeside granite.
It is the private property of The Royal Family and can only be worn after permission from the reigning Monarch. The only other person permitted to wear the Balmoral Tartan is The Sovereign's Piper, whose kilt and fly plaid are made in it. Kinloch Anderson are custodians of the Balmoral Tartan, along with a number of other tartans designed specially for the Royal Family.
The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Tartan
We are also extremely proud to have designed The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Tartan, chosen and approved by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Based on the sett of the Green Stewart Tartan, which we designed for King George VI, the pattern is the second to be approved by a Monarch.
The tartan consists of seven colours, representing the seven decades of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Specifically, platinum Grey celebrates the Platinum Jubilee, green reflects the King George VI Tartan, red, white, and blue stand for the colours of the United Kingdom flag, and gold symbolises the Crown.
