Kilt Fly Plaids

The Fly Plaid is worn on the left shoulder positioned beneath the epaulette. It is normally about 1.5 metres square and is gathered at one corner, attached at the gathered centre with a brooch.

The Fly Plaid is traditionally pearl fringed but can also be plain fringed. The swinging folds of the kilt fly plaid provide an additional and unique character to the highland dress outfit together with its traditional implications. The plaid evolved when the 'great' kilt was separated into the ‘little’ kilt and plaid – the plaid being the upper section.
