The origin of the name Allison is in doubt but it is thought that the Scottish Allison's name was derived from MacAlister so it came from North Kintyre and Knapdale. Therefore Allison is both a sept name of the MacAlister clan and the MacDonald clan so they can use their tartans as well. This design originated from a collector in the 1930s.
