Edinburgh
Gaelic: Dun Eideann
Latin Motto: Nisi Dominus Frustra (Except the Lord in vain)
The City of Edinburgh tartan was created to mark the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, hosted by the City of Edinburgh in October 1997.
The sett for the City of Edinburgh tartan is based on the Stewart Old Clan Tartan because of the City's kinship with the Stewarts over many centuries.
The colours of the design are based on the Arms of the City of Edinburgh Council which feature a central silver shield showing a three towered castle with black stonework, silver / white joints and standing on a rock-like base.
